On the 18th of May, 101 Social will be hosting the first back-to-back performance of two Margate-based songwriters who have each been making their own way around the Kentish gig circuit. This promises to be a night of musical discovery, where the solemn and the silly will each be given a fair whack of the drum-machine. Whether you've seen either artist before, or are just looking for something new, this will be a chance to sample two unique takes on the kind of wistful bedroom-pop currently emanating from the Garden of England's pointy end.
LEO is an up-and-coming local songwriter, visual artist and lichen enthusiast. Coastal music-lovers may already have been treated to his effortless voice and emotive songwriting at Justine's, Olby's or the Albion Rooms. He's also a regular at 101 Social's own wonderful open mic night; and if you've only seen him perform a couple of songs in that context, now is your chance to enjoy a larger portion of LEO in a relaxed setting, potentially while eating a really good pizza.
TONY Westcliff is a performer who straddles the worlds of musical comedy and serious songwriting, often riding a cheap 80s keyboard while doing so. Recent highlights including slots for DAU and Liotia, and hosting his own cabaret chat-show vis-a-vie Eric Andre at Margate Arts Club. He also has a regular monthly slot mixing funk and soul on Canterbury-based CityWall Radio. Tony will be playing alongside a reduced line-up of his backing band The Abominations, cooking up a sleazy blend of grunge and rnb in a genre-stew yet to be given a trendy name by music journalists (or food critics).
Together, Tony & Leo promise a night of warm, soulful music with just the right amount of crowd banter. Both acts will appeal to fans of Beck, Gorillaz, Thom Yorke, and any of the sort of lo-fi indie where string-strumming sadboys might just bust out the fuzzy synths at any given moment.
Please be advised that the venue is not fully wheelchair accessible.
