"The Englishman has all the qualities of a poker except its occasional warmth." - Daniel O'Connell
"The [English] do not expect happiness. I had the impression, all the time that I lived there, that they do not want to be happy; they want to be right." - Quentin Crisp
"An Englishman, even if he is alone, forms an orderly queue of one." - George Mikes
Are the English passive aggressive, class-obssessed, rule-bound, cold and ruthless? Or are they funny, charming, diffident, awkward and polite to a fault?
Yes - preferably all at once.
Check your "no sex please, we're British" attitude at the door and join us for a blinding evening exploring what makes the English tick, curated by amateur sociologist and dirty, scrounging immigrant extraordinaire Andrew Bryan. We'll strip back the layers of cultural identity and take a long, hard butcher's at the English, warts and all. Hosted by Dr Sharon Husbands - a true devotee of English drinking culture - we reckon you'll have a cracking good time whether you know your onions already or you think cultural studies is all a load of tosh.
Don’t worry we haven’t Brexit-ed the Duchess of Pork… yet. She’ll be on the decks, bottoming her way into 2018 like always.
About the Curator:
Andrew moved to England 10 years ago and has been trying to figure out what the hell he got himself into ever since. Although he's been a keen participant-observer, living, working and even becoming friends with the natives for a decade now, he's still pretty sure he’s only got about half the story, if that.
