A discussion about the word queer's significance for LGBT+ people
With the Office for National Statistics (ONS) statistics showing a steady decline of people in the UK identifying as straight and a whole new generation of people more open and diverse about their gender identity, it seems an opportune moment to take a close look at the word queer: where it came from, why it was reclaimed and what it means in 2020.
Scottish Parliament's LGBT+ staff network, SPOut are delighted to present a panel discussion with Dr Meg-John Barker and Prof Sharon Cowan, to do just that. Through their own perspective and experiences, the panellists will explore the term's history, significance and role in shaping identity and what it means for the LGBT+ communities.
We welcome participants to submit questions to the panel beforehand. Please feel free to email these to spout@parliament.scot
We will be back in touch closer to the time with links and instructions to join the event virtually. We are actively looking to provide live captioning for the event. We will provide an update in subsequent communications.
The purpose of SPOut is to develop awareness and understanding within the organisation of the experiences and challenges of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Non-binary and Pansexual (LGBT+) communities, who want to work for, visit or engage with the Parliament. We will do this by supporting, recognising and celebrating people of all and multiple identities to enable them to fulfill their potential.
