Pearl Alcock's shebeen opened in the mid-1970s in Brixton and ran until 1981 - it became the hub for a Black queer community, one that was almost forgotten. Almost . . .
In September, BLKOUT will be hosting a series of events celebrating Pearl and re-imagining what Black queer space, at the heart of our communities could deliver in 2021 and beyond. We are keen to involve as many of the Black and/or LGBTQ organisations that operate in Brixton (and across London) in the events that we are hosting, as well as Black LGBTQ entrepreneurs and community members.
Join us as we reveal more about our exciting plans and discuss how you can take part in what we believe will be a ground-breaking intervention - opening up possibilities for all of us, and helping to create our 'new extraordinary' - none of us have ever aspired to be normal, after all 😉
We are particularly interested in connecting with:
- Arts or heritage-led organisations
- Youth-led organisations
- Black LGBTQ entrepreneurs (retail)
- LGBTQ elders
- DJs, Club promoters
- Videographers
- Landlords, specialists in meanwhile space use
- Brixton residents and business owners
Given the broad range of potential interest, we will be hosting two events one in the evening and another during regular work hours to enable participation.
