Whatever happened to Angelina Jolie? Wasn’t she meant to be some kinda queer goth rebel? When did she get so quiet and hetero?
If this really makes you think, join us for THE FIRST CRINGE! QUEER FILM & ARTS FEST event: the Jolie Cringe! Film Fest.
Over 2 double bills of 90s cult films, we trace the journey of one Hollywood princess from heroin chic & bisexuality, to hetero-matrimony & transracial adoption. From great, complex, iconic roles in counter-cultural crossover hits, to this. Find out why, at our 2 day think-in and oppositional viewing party.
Dress up very welcome. All of today's fashion is influenced by these 4 films anyway!…
Day 1: dyke gangs hack the planet!
6:00pm doors
6:30pm Foxfire (1995, 102min)
8:30pm break
8:45pm Hackers (1996, 197min)
11:00pm end
We explore Jolie's countercultural beginnings with 2 radical 90s films that define the era that most of us were ‘bi-curious’ in. Expect queerbaiting, tender testimonies, pop quizzes, temporary tattoos, and some excavation of our queer roots.
In Foxfire, based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates (so lesbian!) Jolie plays Legs, a rebel girl who has just entered the world of 5 shy, disparate school girls, to teach them how to stand up for themselves against r*pe culture, and the importance of female (romantic) friendship. The deal is sealed by a candlelit stick n' poke session to a soundtrack including Patti Smith, L7, and Kristin Hersh. We will of course mostly be talking about Jenny Shimizu, Jolie's onscreen dyke lover.
After a quick pop quiz, and maybe even a costume change or 2, we'll be back to HACK THE PLANET! Whilst we can rightfully bemoan Jolie's dumping of the beautiful Jenny Shimizu for the totally cute Jonny Lee Miller, Jonny and Ange are CLEARLY meant to be a dyke couple in this film. Look at the hair. Join them and their gang of QTIPOC cyber freaks on a rollerskating journey against the system, thru the internet as imagined by Hollywood execs in the mid-nineties.
What does it all mean?! And HOW do you go from this to what comes next… Join us to work it all out this Spring.
