Mother Clap & Mother Courage – in the form of Lasana Shabazz & Azara – announce the Season's top Mollies and Tommies!
About this event
Burgh House & 'Les Bougies Baroques' are proud to present
Good Golly, Miss Molly & Master Tommy!
Join us at Burgh House for the continuation of our first annual Queer Georgian Social Season as we take you back to a time when queers were more visible and accepted than you thought.
18th-century London was home to a flourishing queer subculture with Molly & Tommy Houses – which were frequented by queer people from all walks of life – at the centre of the queer social scene. The terms ‘Molly’ & ’Tommy’ were intended as slurs against queer men & women respectively – and also described the ‘houses’ (clubs, taverns, inns, or coffee houses) where they met up in secret. The two more well-known places of assignation in this regard were one run by Mother Clap in Field Lane, Holborn and one run by Mother Courage in Suffolk Street off the Haymarket – specialist meeting places-cum-brothels catering for males and females respectively.
This immersive evening of revelries for Mollies, Tommies, and everyone in between will be hosted by none other than Mother Clap & Mother Courage in the form of Lasana Shabazz & Azara – who will announce the Season’s top Mollies & Tommies against a backdrop of live Georgian-era music performed by 'Les Bougies Baroques’ (conducted from the harpsichord by Ian Peter Bugeja).
All you are required to do is leave your preconceptions at the door, help yourself to some Georgian punch from the bar and come as yourself – with or without bells on!
The Queer Georgian Social Season is conceived & curated by Ian Peter Bugeja & Mark Francis-Vasey.
