Check out the power of queer and trans communities in action!
Come join us in Hove for a fun celebration of queer and trans joy, brought to you by three awesome UK-based queer martial arts gyms.
This event is our way of pushing back against the big sports organizations that try to exclude or segregate trans people, especially trans women, from sports. We’re done with their unfair practices. We are here to show that everyone can participate in sports together. No segregation here! Allies are welcome! You’ll see allies both watching and competing at this event.
This event is a collaboration between queer and trans fight clubs: Nam Yang gym (Brighton), Team Queen (Brighton), Athena Combat Club (Bristol) and Bender Defenders (London). We have joined forces and we are very, VERY EXCITED to announce that we have put together a combat sport event where queers, trans people and allies will compete together.
So what are you waiting for? Get yourself a ticket and come and support your mates, queers and trans people doing sport together and unbothered as it should be!
ABOUT NAM YANG (PLEASE READ)
Nam Yang (CIC) is a community driven, not for profit organization that teaches martial arts in Brighton. They are the UK's first Martial Arts Club of Sanctuary celebrated for their commitment to support refugees and people in the asylum system. Since 1999 they have been offering free training to refugees and asylum seekers. Following an incredibly succesful interclub event last year, we are once again hosting it in their amazing space. This will enable us to contribute and to support their community organization.
If you can't make the event but want to support their cause please donate.
WHAT IS AN INTERCLUB?
An interclub (or “exhibition fight”) is an opportunity to test fighters’ skills in a friendly, supportive and low pressure atmosphere. This means that there will not be winners and losers in this event, both fighters will walk out with a cool, snazzy medal.
Fighters are not going to try to knock each other out, but they will put into practice everything they have learned over their training time. Every fighter has put in a lot of work to fight on this date and there will be many novice fighters, so make sure you shout out extra loud for everyone fighting!
HOW DID WE DO IT?
We don’t use gender as the primary way to categorize bouts. Everyone fights light contact, non-decision bouts and is matched by weight, height, training, and fighting experience. This approach has been successfully used in some European sporting competitions. It wasn’t that hard at all.
WHAT WILL YOU SEE?
In this event there will be Boxing and K1 fights.
Boxing is a stand up combat sport where two people are only allowed to use their fists to fight each other. Strikes are only permitted above the belt, head and body, no strikes are allowed to the groin or to the back of the head.
K1 is a modern style of kickboxing where two standing people are allowed to use their fists, legs and knees to strike. Fighters are allowed to throw strikes to the head, body and legs. No strikes are allowed to the groin or to the back of the head.
