The New Arab presents ‘Germany’s Palestine Problem’ - Edited and Produced by Alexander Durie; Journalist and Presenter: Jad Salfiti
In this investigation, The New Arab examines the price of criticizing Israeli policies in Germany, the silencing of pro-Palestinian voices in the name of cracking down on anti-Semitism, and the implications for free speech. What is it like to speak up about Palestine, or criticise Israeli government policies, in a country where authorities are known to conflate anti-Zionism with antisemitism?
To try and understand the roots of Germany’s anti-Palestinian practices, The New Arab spent time in Berlin interviewing members of one of the biggest Palestinian diaspora communities, who have been affected by censorship of pro-Palestinian advocacy. Germany’s troubled relationship with its past has turned Palestinian self-determination into a no-go subject, earning pro-Palestinian voices severe, life-altering recriminations. For a country that prides itself on learning from its dark chapter of Nazism, is Germany so intent on not being seen as antisemitic that it will defend Israel and Zionism at all costs? And in doing so, shift historical guilt onto Palestinians?
Never Again Ever - On the Streets of Berlin with the Bad Jew - is a tribute to those who stand against racism in all its forms and contribute to the movement for Palestinian liberation worldwide. It exists also to support Jews who challenge the racist, anti-Semitic, and dangerous stereotype perpetuated by the German government through their unwavering support for Israel and shed light on this ongoing struggle.
