How and why do we find words for abortion and reproductive justice? What can we learn from the rich history of this practice, and how is it being renewed and revitalised now in the face of state attacks on bodily autonomy? What can writing about abortion do to inspire activism and change? And what happens when you bring writers and writing about abortion together in a critical mass? Answer all these questions and more in this event celebrating Silver Press’s reproductive justice anthology After Sex, featuring outstanding poets Amelia Loulli (Slip, Jonathan Cape, 2024) and Holly Pester (Comic Timing, Granta, 2021) with After Sex co-editor Alice Spawls, hosted by Abortion Book Club co-chair Joe Strong. The readings and discussion will be followed by an open mic where up to 4 audience members can sign up on the night to read their reproductive justice-related writing (4 x 4 minute slots), hosted by poet So Mayer.
Amelia Loulli is a poet, writer and PhD candidate living in Cumbria. Her debut collection Slip is published by Jonathan Cape. Her work has won a Northern Writers' Award, been highly commended in the Forward Prizes, shortlisted 6 times for the Bridport Prize and published in various places including the London Review of Books, The Poetry Review and The Rialto. Holly Pester is a poet and writer. She has worked in sound art and performance, with BBC Radio, Women’s Art Library and Wellcome Collection. Recent publications are Comic Timing (poetry, Granta, 2021) and The Lodgers (a novel, Granta, 2024). Alice Spawls is co-editor of the London Review of Books and a founding editor of Silver Press. Joe Strong is the co-chair of Abortion Book Club with Dr Rishita Nandagiri. Joe’s expertise centres on abortion and reproductive justice both as an academic at LSE, and an activist at Supporting Abortion for Everyone (SAFE), Abortion Without Borders and Abortion Talk.
