This event will start with screening of a documentary ‘Demand an Answer from History'. It is about the landmark case in Chinese #MeToo movement, Xianzi v. Zhu Jun.
Then, Xianzi, a leading figure in the Chinese feminist movement and a key participant in the #MeToo movement since 2018 will share her experiences and insights. Xianzi will discuss her landmark #MeToo-related lawsuit against Zhu Jun, a well-known anchor at the state-owned broadcaster CCTV, highlighting this case as one of the most high-profile within China's #MeToo movement.
Followingly, Professor Huang Chang-Ling (National Taiwan University) and Dr Sarah Liu (University of Edinburgh) will join Xianzi in a roundtable discussion.
Documentary-Screening: 向历史要答案 ‘Demanding an answer from history’ (M andarin with English subtitles)
‘Demand an Answer from History’ is a documentary about the landmark case in Chinese #MeToo movement, Xianzi v. Zhu Jun.The film focuses on the experiences of #MeToo supporters outside the courts during the three hearings of this case. With a blend of live footage and narratives from supporters, it presents the case’s origins, its profound impact, and its ripple effects in society.

Speaker: XianziXianzi is a prominent Chinese feminist activist and writer, recognised by FT Women in 2018 and listed among BBC 100 Women 2022. In August 2018, Xianzi courageously shared her #MeToo experience on Weibo, marking the beginning of her enduring journey as a forefront activist in the feminist movement. Since then, she has strived to build a support network for victims in #MeToo movement globally. Her activism and story have gained international attention, featuring in major media outlets including the BBC, The Guardian, and Reuters. Xianzi has been invited to share her experience and insights at events across prestigious universities in Hong Kong, Japan, and United States. Additionally, she has authored several influential essays and social media posts addressing feminist issues within China.
