As LGBTQIA+ young people transition from school to college, university, or vocational training, they encounter distinct challenges that can impact their educational journeys and future careers. Many LGBTQIA+ young adults feel pressured to conceal their identities once they leave the supportive environment of school, leading to potential barriers in both their academic and personal development.
This workshop is designed to empower educators and support staff to help LGBTQIA+ young adults navigate these transitions with confidence. Through real-world case studies, evidence-based strategies, and collaborative discussions, this session will provide insights into the specific challenges these young people face and offer practical tools to support their success in education and beyond.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognising Unique Challenges: Gain a deeper understanding of the specific challenges LGBTQIA+ young adults encounter during transitions to further education or vocational training. These challenges include mental health concerns, social acceptance, identity concealment, and discrimination in new environments.
- The Importance of a Holistic Approach: Learn why an intersectional and holistic approach to education is crucial in fostering confident, resilient LGBTQIA+ students. Understand the wider national context of LGBTQIA+ inclusivity in education and how it impacts long-term student outcomes.
- Strengthening Your Role as an Educator: Discover how to proactively equip LGBTQIA+ young adults with the skills, resilience, and coping strategies needed to manage the challenges they may face in new educational settings. Learn how to create a supportive environment that empowers students to embrace their authenticity.
- Utilising Resources for Continued Support: Explore the range of resources and support networks available to LGBTQIA+ students during and after their educational transitions. Understand how to connect young adults with the right tools to ensure their success beyond the classroom and in their early careers.
Workshop Outcomes:
- Improved Understanding: Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the barriers LGBTQIA+ young adults face in education and the workplace, supported by data and case studies.
- Practical Strategies: Attendees will gain practical strategies to better support LGBTQIA+ students, from preparing them for new educational environments to fostering ongoing resilience.
- Resource Awareness: Participants will be equipped with knowledge of key resources and networks available to LGBTQIA+ students, enabling continuous support during and after their educational journeys.
This workshop aims to create an informed and proactive educational environment where LGBTQIA+ young adults can thrive both academically and personally.
