Corn Doll Workshop with Daddy Street Fox
As part of our Messed Up Folk event you can learn a traditional skill and make your very own corn doll!
Tom Lewis aka Daddystreetfox is a Hackney based artist who in recent years has been discovering the endangered heritage craft of wheat weaving, straw art and corn doll making.
He is especially interested in folklore customs and tales, what nature offers him for his art through the changing seasons and traditions of the Pagan calendar.
Prior to this Daddystreetfox was a street artist who took inspiration from urban wildlife and created collage images of Fox heads from materials collected from nature like leaves, tree bark and seed pods. These fox images became a familiar sight around the streets of Shoreditch in East London.
He comes from a background working in fashion, tailoring and pattern cutting, graduating from London College of Fashion with a degree in Costume.
In his first ever workshop Daddystreetfox will teach you how to make a traditional corn dolly using soaked corn husks, layered and tied together and folded to create your own doll. Corn dolls were created from the harvest as a token to keep the spirit of the grain alive throughout the winter months until the spring sowing season, traditionally made from stems of wheat, rye and other grains or from the husks from cobs of corn.
This project is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund
