No Drama! - Reading Trans representation on screen and other film making crimes, an illustrated panel event.

On Wednesday Nov 20 VFDalston will be hosting a shadey look at the history of Trans representation on the big screen, how Hollywood and indie film makers have portrayed trans characters, and our fabulous panel of industry experts will discuss the good and the (often) bad examples.

The talk will be proceeded by a 60 minute montage of clips from films highlighting the ground breakingly great, the jaw droppingly awful and the downright offensive.

We will task our panel with creating a Manifesto of demands for future film makers to consult.

Then we will open up for questions and statements from the audience.

As well as in person tickets, we will be hosting the evening online, so you can sign up for an IRL ticket or a streaming link.

For the streaming link we will be filming, if you do not want to be included let our hosts know and we can make sure you are not seen.

The venue will be The Outsiders Gallery at VFDalston, No64 Stoke Newington Road.

The space is fully accessible with a small ramp at the front door from the high street, and a newly installed wheelchair user designed bathroom.

Our panelists include Jaye Hudson (she/her) (TGirls on Film), Rue Lumbroso (she/her) Transmissions, Tara Brown (they/them) Fringe! Queer Film & Arts Festival, Molly Miles (they/them) Catagory H horror club and Trans Buffet, and our host is E-J Scott (they/them) from the Museum of Transology. The evening has been organised by Woody (he/they) from the Pink Palace Queer Film Club.

The Lineup

Jaye Hudson (she/her) is a performer, historian and film programmer, who runs the trans feminine archival project TGirlsonFilm.

Rue Lumbroso (she/her) is an artist and film programmer, and one half of Transmissions, a weekly event where she's screened a glut of films for a loyal audience of queer and trans kinoheads over the past three years in East London.

She also presides over a modest meme empire, which has had her branded both as "a disgrace" and "the funniest person in London".

Tara Brown (they/them) is a Film Curator and Creative Evaluation Consultant. They describe themselves as a Black fat queer non-binary trans disabled femme. Inspired by the principles of Disability Justice their primary goal is to ensure that cinema is as accessible, diverse and brilliant as possible!

Molly Miles (they/them) is a film curator and MA student at the National Film and Television, with an interest in underseen films. They are one half of Category H horror film club and one half of Trans Buffet, an ‘all you can submit all you can watch’ trans video club. E-J Scott (they/them) - UK Museums & Heritage Awards Winner, 2024, Museum Activist Award, 2020/21 - is an academic and curator. Their co-curatorial practice focusses on engaging historically misrepresented communities to harness their collective agency as co-producers in museum and heritage spaces. E-J founded the Museum of Transology @museumoftransology (2014), Trans Pride UK (2023) and the British Digital Network (Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art/ACE/Yale/Tate, 2022).

Woody (he/they) curates and hosts the award winning Pink Palace Queer Film Club, which runs weekly at the Rio Cinema Dalston, and was co-writer of the Tape Slide Archive - Hackney in the 80's book, they also lecture MA students in Film at Goldsmiths University.
