We’re excited to welcome Justin Wong, the renowned Hong Kong cartoonist behind That City (《那城》), for an inspiring talk about political cartooning and Hong Kong’s newspaper publishing.
Talk:
In this talk, Justin Wong will discuss his book That City (《那城》), a series of political cartoons published between 2020 and 2021 in the Sunday Ming Pao. Due to political reasons, Justin Wong was forced to leave Hong Kong and relocate to London. That City unexpectedly became his farewell to Hong Kong, as he chronicled the city’s changing landscape during a time of political upheaval. During the talk, Wong will also share insights into his creative journey of publishing politically charged cartoons in newspapers.

About Justin Wong:
Justin Wong is a London-based comic writer. He started his career as a political cartoonist and editorial illustrator in 2007 and his daily political cartoon column, Gei Gei Gaak Gaak, was published in the Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao. Wong has authored several graphic novels, including Lonely Planet, Hello World, That City, New Hong Kong, Big Time, and Je préfèrerais ne, which have been published in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and France. Wong served also as an Assistant Professor at the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University from 2008-2021.
