Communal Clay
Nerikomi Workshop
Using different coloured clay bodies we will introduce you to Nerikomi; the technique of layering, marbling and combining different coloured clays to create designs.
Nerikomi ware dates back to the Tang dynasty in China (618-907 AD), but was refined and popularized in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868). It has developed and transformed over the centuries, becoming incorporated into the Japanese ceramic tradition and adapted to contemporary styles.
The session will last 2 hours.
Theses workshops will be more focused on the tactility of playing, practicing and learning sculpture techniques.
At the end of the workshop if you wish to have your piece fired and glazed, we ask you pay an additional £10 to cover firing costs, glaze materials & transport of your work. **
The work will be glazed in transparent glaze allowing you to see the patternsand designs created using Nerikomi.
Any leftover clay at the end of the session will be recycled for future use, minimising wastage and keeping our workshops sustainable.
In reference to The Green Bottle Scale, A tool for economic justice.
We have made our own sliding scale that's more current and relevant to Londoners living situation.
We have created this to help people with what tickets to purchase as we try to make our workshops as accessible as possible, whilst also ensuring workshop facilitators and collaborators are fairly paid and we can continue to do this.
**At the end of the session, if you want to have your work fired and glazed there will be an option to pay an additional fee of £10.
All fired and glazed work will be read to collect from SET Social in a few weeks time.
We want to make ceramics affordable and accessible to more people therefore any profits made will be used to run more community clay workshops in the future.
PLEASE READ: Clay and ceramics are fragile materials until fired and glazed, on occasion things can break or become damaged during the drying and firing process', Communal Clay is not responsible for any damage that may occur during these.
