Cuffley to Bayford Winter Solstice Walk – Saturday 21st December 2024

On the shortest day of the year, come for a wander in the woods to celebrate Yule/Winter Solstice. We’ll squelch along footpaths from Cuffley to Bayford and take time to set an intention (if you want) for the coming year.

Distance: 12 km / 7.4 miles
Difficulty rating: Beginner/Improver*
Walking time: 3.5 hours
Pace: Not too fast, with a stop a little over halfway round to warm up in the pub.
Elevation: 53m – 109m (total ascent 288m - gentle hills).
Accessibility: This walk will be on muddy, unpaved, uneven footpaths with tree roots and some gates/stiles.
Kit needed: Sturdy shoes you don't mind getting wet and muddy (trainers with good grip, walking shoes/boots etc.), waterproof jacket and waterproof trousers (optional but recommended), a small rucksack to carry your food (lunch and snacks), water (at least 1 litre), personal medication, warm clothing (jumper, hat, gloves etc.), something to sit on the ground (plastic bag, sit mat etc.). Please don’t wear jeans if you can help it – they will get wet and will rub, making you uncomfortable and cold – wear leggings/walking trousers/sweatpants.

*Beginner/Improver walks are for people who have been on short walks before (walks with friends/family, dog walks, complete beginner walks in a group etc.) but want to try a half day walk that involves walking a little further with a few more gentle hills. Everyone is welcome but it is important that we all go at the same pace, so be prepared to walk slower than usual, especially if you are used to walking longer distances more frequently. The idea is to have a chilled time connecting with nature and enjoying the journey together - not ‘smashing the hike' as fast as possible. Snack breaks and pauses to marvel at nature are encouraged!

The walk will take place in any weather, including rain (except in the case of a severe weather warning), so please be prepared to be outside for hours in all weather (see kit list).
No refunds - resale might be possible if there's a waiting list - feel free to give your ticket to a mate - just let me know so I can expect them.
