From the creative direction of Dapper, comes the Music Hall spinoff for LGBTQ+ History Month!
There is a rose in our hearts for you 🌹
Velvet is Dapper's cabaret-centric sister. A retrosexual metrosexual drag music hall with performances and words from our stars. Get transported to a different time– a time that never existed.
(Or maybe it did?)
Secret victorian-era lesbians at a speakeasy music hall, but make it modern dyke drag!
Inspired by the victorian Drag King novel Tipping The Velvet, our night invites you once again to step into a lesbian wonderland— a dykefication of the music hall for the archival and history lover dykes. So strap in lovergirls and loverbois, this is an evening you don’t want to miss.
Theme
Re-imagining dyke history through art (literature, performance, fashion, media)
Dress Code
Black-tie inspired by: Victorian, OFOS fantasy, old timey.
(Our events are “black-tie” to encourage people who want to come in suits, gowns, full drag - not to judge those who don't. It’s a safe space to be “overdressed” but we won’t strictly enforce this. Incorporating the theme into your outfit is encouraged but not compulsory!)
About the Venue
For our launch we took over a boys club, now we're taking over a palace!
The building that hosts Chats Palace was established in 1913 as a Carnegie library for the betterment of the people of the East End. The library closed in 1974 and soon after the building was reclaimed by members of the local community. It was the venue for a load of political/benefit gigs throughout the nineties (including Hackney Anarchy Week and a poll tax benefit which ended in 19 arrests), and has a long history of radical/community activity like these.
Accessibility
There is step-free access into the building and the ground floor of the venue is fully wheelchair accessible, with double doors throughout. There is also level access to: The Venue through main doors, The Theatre, The Library Bar, Disabled toilet, The Stage (via ramp), Artist Dressing Room, Loading Bay (at the rear of Venue). The capacity of the venue has been reduced for this event to allow easier movement of mobility aids through the venue. More detailed accessibility information available here: https://chatspalace.com/access/
We offer free companion tickets and preferred space for wheelchair users and those who require a seat. If you need to avail of one of these options, or have any other accessibility needs you would like to discuss with us in advance, please select an “Accessibility Needs” ticket at checkout and we will be able to contact you via the email address you booked under.
We received a query about the air ventilation of the venue, which we passed on to the management: they have confirmed that as the venue is a historic building, it does not have modern air filtration systems installed and they cannot specify the number of air changes per hour. They have sent us their employee COVID-19 guidelines, which we can pass on to prospective attendees if you would like to take a look before buying a ticket. We are also working on arranging a live-stream of performances, we are still figuring out the tech feasibility of this but if we're successful we will put livestream tickets on sale for those who are not comfortable or able to attend in-person.
Refund/Resale
Tickets are non-refundable. However, Outsavvy allows ticket resale through its platform once an event has sold out. We are also happy to accommodate privately-arranged resales, just give the name you booked under to the person you have sold your ticket to and we will allow them entry under your ticket.
