About the workshop
Zines (pronounced zeens, like you've chopped the end of the word ‘magazines’) are a great way to self-publish and get your ideas, art, poetry, stories, lyrics, or whatever else you've got out there into the world. DIY musicians and fans have been making zines about all kinds of stuff and enriching their local scene for decades, and you can too!
In this workshop, Ripley and Saul will take you through a few techniques you can use to make your own zines, from the classic 8-panel mini-zine (perfect for tiny comics and how-to guides) to cut n' stick collage. When it comes to making a zine, there are no real rules - as long as it's self-made and what you want it to be, it's perfect. So whether you're in a band and want to spread your message, a DIY scene fan who wants to tell the world about your new favourite acts, a comic artist who wants to set their characters free or just have an idea you think would be fun, come get started on your zine making journey!
About Ripley & Saul
Ripley (they/them) plays bass and does a little bit of singing for Breakup Haircut (First Timers Fest 2019). They have been volunteering with First Timers since 2020 and are a fan of DIY music and art. They are a self-taught musician, who is a big supporter of the sort of community building and knowledge sharing around music education and performance that First Timers Fest is dedicated to.
Saul (they/them) is the vocalist in Magpie Conspiracy (First Timers Fest 2024) and before that was in a band called IRN Brunette (First Timers Fest 2018). They've done a bunch of things for First Timers over the last few years and love getting to see the art people make when they're told to just go ahead and make it. Saul has been a collector of DIY zines, badges and stickers since they first saw a merch table as a baby punk.

People of any musical experience and of any identity can attend our workshops, though they are largely aimed at beginners. To play the fest itself your band needs to meet two or more of the following criteria:
One or more people have never been in a band before
One or more people have never performed that role in a band before (e.g if a drummer is having a go at vocals)
One or more people belongs to a marginalised group, for example, they are a woman, a person of colour, LGBTQIA+, disabled, working class, neurodivergent.

We cannot provide any assurance that this event is a covid-free zone. Mask wearing is strongly encouraged when appropriate, and we encourage attendees to take a lateral flow test within the 48 hours before the workshop.
