Step into the world of Afro-Peruvian rhythms and discover how traditional beats can awaken and transform your movement! This dynamic workshop blends the rich, soulful rhythms of Afro-Peruvian music with guided movement exploration, allowing participants to connect with their bodies and culture on a deeper level. Together, we will celebrate the power of rhythm as a tool for self-expression, grounding, and joy.
The workshop will begin with grounding exercises to tune into the body's natural rhythm, using breath and gentle movements. Participants will then be introduced to traditional Afro-Peruvian percussion patterns, such as the festejo and landó, feeling these rhythms pulse through the body as they explore both guided and freestyle movement.
Through each section, participants will explore how rhythm influences movement, experimenting with tempo, intensity, and the storytelling qualities of Afro-Peruvian music. Guided exercises will invite participants to respond to different beats through footwork, hip movements, and full-body expressions, while also building confidence in improvisation. The energy of the group will encourage each participant to celebrate their own rhythm and discover the stories their bodies want to tell.
Who Should Join: This workshop is open to movers of all levels, from seasoned dancers to beginners who feel called to connect with rhythm, culture, and their own unique movement style. Afro-Peruvian beats bring a joyful intensity that is accessible and inviting, and no prior experience is needed—just a willingness to explore and move!
Benefits of the Workshop:
Deepened body awareness and connection to rhythm
A joyful exploration of Afro-Peruvian culture through music and movement
Increased self-confidence in improvisational movement
Enhanced coordination and fluidity in rhythm-based movement
A sense of community and shared energy through group exploration
The rhythmic base for the Afroperuvian workshop will be led by multi percussionist Kieffer Santander who received an award for his contributions to national heritage from the Peruvian embassy in London. As founder of the band “Manos Negras”, running regular workshops and playing with countless Latin American groups in London and further afield we are in very good hands to learn from this maestro.
The movement and vocal section of the workshop will be guided by Eliana Rosas, founder of Mulata Dance Company and also co-organiser of the Resistance Heartbeats workshop series. When performing the tradition of female Peruvian lead singers she shares the joy of popular music from the coast with its colourful Criolla fusion.
The two artists often collaborate and currently they are completing a sold out month long music residency at Orchids Festival Kew Gardens. We are looking forward to welcome you this Thursday and get moving! There will be a big jam at the ennd so bring your favourite percussion and clothes to move (most instruments will be provided).
