Elemental Touch: A Sensory Exploration Workshop
Workshop Overview
This immersive 2.5-hour experience will guide you through a journey of sensory awakening and mindful touch. Designed for Queer people of all genders seeking to deepen their sensory awareness and expand their touch vocabulary, this workshop creates a safe space for exploration and discovery.
Part 1: Nervous System Regulation
We begin by creating a foundation of presence and receptivity through vagal toning practices:
- Conscious Breathing: Guided diaphragmatic breathing exercises to activate the parasympathetic nervous system
- Gentle Movement: Slow, rhythmic movements focused on the neck, shoulders, and spine to release tension
- Sound Resonance: Using soft vocalisation and humming to stimulate vagal nerve response
- Facial Release: Gentle self-massage of jaw, temples, and facial muscles to reduce holding patterns
These practices help participants transition from the sympathetic "doing" mode to the parasympathetic "being" mode—essential for heightened sensory perception.
Part 2: The Elements of Touch
Explore four distinct touch qualities inspired by natural elements:
Earth Touch
- Grounding, firm pressure
- Slow, deliberate movements
- Palm-centered contact
- Creates feelings of security and presence
- Practice: Partner compression and mindful holding techniques
Air Touch
- Light, feathery contact
- Quick, playful movements
- Fingertip-focused
- Creates ticklish, surprising sensations
- Practice: Barely-there tracing and gentle brushing exercises
Fire Touch
- Friction-based, warming
- Rhythmic, building intensity
- Whole hand engagement
- Creates energising, awakening sensations
- Practice: Percussion techniques and escalating pressure patterns
Water Touch
- Flowing, continuous movement
- Smooth transitions without breaking contact
- Fluid pressure variations
- Creates soothing, connecting sensations
- Practice: Wave-like motions and seamless touch sequences
Part 3: Sensory Tool Exploration
Expanding beyond hand touch with carefully selected implements:
- Feathers: From large, soft ostrich plumes to small, precise craft feathers
- Silk and Fabric: Various textures from smooth silk to textured velvet
- Temperature Play: Warm stones and cool metal implements
- Percussion Tools: Soft drumming implements for rhythmic stimulation
