‘Every word spoken in Irish is a bullet for Irish freedom’.
This anarchic, political, rambunctious, Oscar-nominated film that came out in August 2024 is the part biographic, part fictionalised and fantastical tale of the Irish language Belfast rap band Kneecap. It references the British occupation and repressive presence of the colonial-style Royal Irish Constabulary as a brooding presence behind the family dynamics of the band members.
While the band members are proudly Republican in their sympathies they have little truck with the current Sinn Fein government and its failure to deliver the ‘peace and prosperity’ proclaimed when it capitulated to the Good Friday Agreement.
The band have spoken out repeatedly against the genocide in Gaza, and against anti-immigration rioters in Belfast. Come for the politics, come for the music, come for the craic.
