Punking, originating in the 1970s Los Angeles underground gay scene, was developed by Black and Latinx gay communities as a form of self-expression and liberation amidst societal oppression. This powerful dance style became mainstream as Wh/Waacking and combines expressive arm movements, intricate footwork, and dramatic poses, allowing dancers to channel emotions and narratives through movement.
No previous Wh/Waacking experience is necessary! In this workshop, Myss Tru will guide participants through the foundational techniques of Punking and Wh/Waacking, emphasising its rich history and cultural significance.
What You Will Learn in the Wh/Waacking Foundation Workshop:
- Dance the Story, Not Just the Steps: You’ll explore the deep roots of Punking & Wh/Waacking, its history, culture, and emotional truth, so that every move you make carries meaning.
- Build Strong Technique with Confidence: We’ll break down the foundations clearly (from poses to arms to musicality) so you can feel grounded and empowered in your body.
- Expressive Yourself with Purpose: This isn’t just about looking good… it’s about feeling free. You’ll be guided through prompts and exercises that help you connect your movement to your personal voice and story.
The final hour we will have a jam and social session, creating the community vibe that's so central to Wh/Waacking and providing space for both newcomers and seasoned dancers to connect, share, and celebrate the dance's legacy together. We will provide some snacks and feel free to bring food if you like!
This workshop is open to everyone, especially welcoming those new to waacking and dance in general. In acknowledgement of the people who founded this style, Queer, Trans, Intersex, Black, Indigenous People of Colour (QTIBIPOC) are offered Pay What You Can tickets.
