CLASS DESCRIPTION
The iconic and romanticised Titanic scene is possibly one of the most memeified moments in cinema history – but what does it really mean to be a muse?
Calling on her experiences as a professional artists model, in this lecture Lily Holder aims to retell the history of figurative art from the perspective of the model. We shall explore the impact of the muse on the development of art history and ask why we rarely hear the story behind the iconic figures that hang on our gallery walls.
From Lizzie Siddall to Edie Sedgwick – we will discuss the tumultuous and often co-dependent dynamic between Artist and Muse and ask what happens when these women are no longer deemed useful to the men they inspired. We will close the session by discussing the contemporary role of the life model and how the pandemic has influenced models to redefine and reinvent their role in the artistic process
ABOUT OUR LECTURER
Lily Holder is an Artist, Model and Educator based in South East London. Lily has been a part of the LDG story since modelling for one of our first ever Life Drawing classes at Lewisham Art House in 2016 and very swiftly becoming a regular model and collaborator of ours.
Lily is passionate about drawing from the figure and is particularly interested in the collaborative relationship between Artist and Model. In her teaching she draws on her decade of experience working as a model, bringing knowledge from both sides of the easel to the classroom.
