Theo Dussek
Theo Dussek is a trans singer-songwriter crafting lyrical, saltwater-soaked folk music that sails between tradition and transformation. As the Pirate Troubadour, he draws from the sea-bound myths of the British Isles, the raw heart of confessional folk, and the romance of queer love to write songs that feel timeless and deeply personal.
Though raised in the landlocked county of Hertfordshire, Theo’s imagination has always been pulled toward open waters. His music conjures sailors and sweethearts, ships and longing, rivers and devotion — delivered with a smooth tenor voice that glides over rolling acoustic guitar and rhythmic, heartfelt arrangements. There’s a clear folk lineage here, but also the melodic ease of Americana and the listenability of modern indie-folk, influenced by artists like Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Nick Drake, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Bob Dylan.
His latest album, Written in the River (2024), is a love letter in 12 songs — an honest, celebratory and healing expression of trans joy and intimacy, charting the course of a relationship across emotional and nautical terrain. Released independently, it blends poetic storytelling with singalong melodies, and seeks to carve space for the transgender experience within the folk tradition.
