On Thursday 30th April, to celebrate the paperback release of When We Ruled: The Rise and Fall of Twelve African Queens and Warriors, we welcome its author, historian Paula Akpan to the shop for a conversation with writer and storyteller Megha Mohan at 7:30pm!
‘A rich, sumptuous and beautifully written tapestry’ – Candice Carty-Williams, bestselling author of Queenie
There are women who ruled vast swathes of the African continent. They led, loved and fought for their kingdoms and people and their impact can still be felt today. Beyond the lands they called home however, so few of us have heard their names.
From pre-colonial Nigeria to the rich plains of Rwanda, from the hills of Madagascar to apartheid South Africa, Akpan offers a deeply rich insight into the lives of these powerful queens and takes you on a spellbinding, enrapturing and immersive journey that is nothing short of revelatory.
When We Ruled is filled with fascinating stories of royalty, ancient civilisations, conquest and colonisation. It is a gripping new history, where women take the centre stage.
To join Paula in conversation, we welcome writer and reporter Megha Mohan, whose newly published Herlands: Lessons From Societies Where Women Make the Rules provides us with a valuable insight into the many roles women in power, or who take power, have played throughout history - introducing us to fascinating and diverse groups of women. From the controversial feminist online trolls of South Korea, to older women co-housing in Paris and North London, and the Rain Queens of South Africa, a truly global look at women's community.
