🔥Lady Nana energy is still spreading🥵 Here we go againnn💦
Join us for Shame & Slay: Zine Launch (No.2) + Cover Making Workshop on Saturday 6 June at The People’s Letters!
‘Refund’ Is My Chant: Lady Nana and Chinese Queer Art of Failure is adapted from queer artist Blueberrylan’s MA dissertation at LSE. Based on interviews with Lady Nana’s fan community, the study explores why this legendary, middle-aged rural woman—who was banned by mainstream media—has been canonised by queer audiences as a ‘Gay Hero,’ and how queer popular culture is produced within a heteronormative social environment.
The event has two parts:
❤️🔥Part 1: Zine Presentation & Discussion
Blueberrylan (@bblueberrylan) will introduce the zine, Lady Nana’s fan community, and the queer art of failure, where ‘refund’ becomes a chant, and flop becomes a survival strategy.
📖Part 2: Zine Cover Decoration Workshop
Inspired by the Chinese primary school child activity of making protective book covers, the workshop reimagines covering as both concealment and celebration, especially for things considered ‘too queer,’ or simply guilty pleasures.
Hosted by Youjia (@pubis_project), participants are invited to bring a book, zine, notebook, fanfic printout, or any printed object they would like to decorate. And if you forget to bring one, that’s a perfect excuse to buy some from the bookshop ;)
Bad taste welcome. Divas welcome.😈👅
