Created especially for Hackney Art Week, Leechbook is a 20-minute live performance combining poetry, electronic music, and visuals.
Taking its name from Anglo-Saxon leechbooks—manuals of folk remedies—the work reimagines healing spells for the present moment. These are incantations that refuse to behave: part poem, part glitch, with effects that may vary.
The performance explores whether words and music can actually change us. From sound baths to manifestation culture, contemporary life is filled with claims that they can. Leechbook approaches this idea both sincerely and playfully, presenting poems as spells and absurd instructions—echoing John Cage’s notion of “purposeless play,” but charged with live energy.
Text and sound move together between non sequitur and the physical pulse of glitch-infused club music in the tradition of Blawan, creating an experience that is experimental yet immediate, rhythmic, and surreal. Listen closely, or simply let it wash over you with a drink in hand.
We look forward to celebrating with you!
