No experience necessary, Sxc Scraps will teach you everything from threading a needle, to advanced mending and stitching - just bring yourself and something to upcycle!
Materials:
Bring a garment or other textile that you would like to upcycle (or you can just experiment with any techniques offered onto a denim sampler/patch - if you’re not sure what to bring, but just want to learn some techniques)
All other materials are provided: thread, eyelets, rhinestones, 2nd hand textiles and fabrics. We do encourage you to bring along any fabric, textile scraps, buttons, or beads that you might like to use.
About your host:
Sxc Scraps is run by a sewist of over 17 years, and has been a full-time sewing + sustainability teacher for over 2 years, running classes & workshops for all ages and skill levels.
Her mission: teaching people to extend the lifecycle of clothing and save as much textile waste from going to landfill - with style, slogans, and a bit of spice!
Help! What can I bring!
Bland trousers, tops, etc (with some dubious stains?..) - to add patches onto, a previous Sxc Scrapper made Ocean Trousers by adding applique fish, seaweed, and bubbles! Check out @sxc.scraps to see them
A blazer to add lots of eyelets, hardware, chains galore onto
A plain top or garment to add buttons & beads galore - get that maximalist textural effect, and learn the secure and speedy way to stitch them on.
A holey jumper that you’ve been meaning to learn to darn or repair for aaaaaaages… there’s so many exciting visible mending techniques you can choose (same thing for torn and broken collared shirts!)
With the skills you learn in this workshop, you’ll be able to upcycle any future clothing with slogans, graphics, etc using just a needle and thread! The best part: it’s sustainable, one-off, and custom to you! Don’t let fast fashion giants tell you what to wear: make your own statements ;)
