Step: Zhajie Walk is part of Step, an ongoing series of urban walking projects exploring how bodies move through, occupy, and are read by city space.
This edition draws inspiration from zhajie (炸街), literally “blasting the street”, a practice among shamate youth in China. On their days off, they would style themselves elaborately before gathering in streets, parks, and public spaces that were never fully theirs. Through colour, volume, and collective presence, they briefly reclaimed the right to be seen.
This walk carries that logic into East London. Moving together through the streets around Brick Lane, an area layered with histories of migration, class mobility, and gentrification, participants are invited to reflect on who has the right to appear in urban space, which bodies are welcomed and which are surveilled, and which cultures are absorbed into consumable aesthetics.
Rather than a conventional walking tour, this is a bodily practice: come as you are, or come styled — visibility is the point.
