Join Land In Our Names for Autumn Equinox, a celebration of community heritage at London's last functioning windmill.
This event is by and centres people from the global majority (Black and People of Colour), so members of those communities are especially encouraged to attend.
LION's celebration of community heritage builds transnational solidarity through shared learning across borders and generations. The family-friendly day of learning will include:
- Creative migration and culture workshops by food historian Mama D and artist/researcher Jacob V Joyce
- Folk Music Circle Led by Calliope (bring instruments, your voice, and songs to share!)
- A free community meal
- Creative activities and crafts
- A live performance by artist Nadeem Din Gabisi
This event is by and centres people of the global majority, so members of those communities are especially encouraged to attend.
Come hungry and leave fed.
Land In Our Names (LION) functions as an ecosystem builder, creating opportunities for Black and People of Colour (BPOC) to connect with the land, with nature and with each other. We hold workshops and events for BPOC to skill-share, strategise and build networks of mutual aid and solidarity.
Brixton Windmill is London's last functioning windmill. Built in 1816, the mill uses the same millstones that were used in 1902 to grind flour. Windmill Gardens also hosts the Brixton Windmill Centre. Built by Lambeth Council next to the windmill and leased to the Friends of Brixton Windmill, the centre opened early in 2020 and is used as a visitor centre, education space, and a community venue.
Nadeem Din-Gabisi is a storyteller working in the realms of music, poetry and the visual arts. His work channels his experiences as a British born, second generation immigrant of Sierra Leonean Krio descent. Nadeem's debut album OFFSHORE out now on Moshi Moshi Music tackles themes of belonging, estrangement and identity with 'potent streams of consciousness'.
Calliope are an experimental, multi-instrumental folk collective that takes its inspiration from folk traditions of the black diasporic transatlantic world, blending trad tunes, ancestral musical traditions and cosmic modernity.
Jacob V Joyce is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice amplifies historical and nourishes new queer and anti-colonial narratives. Their work is continually grounded by collaborations and conversations with activists, community groups and archives. Supported by C.R.E.A.M (The Center for Research in Education and Arts Media) Joyce is currently a doctoral research candidate exploring the practical applications of historical African heritage education movements.
