Mushroom Walk

Details

A guided walk through a woodland near London, searching for the beguilling and elusive wild fungi.

We'll be moving at a relaxed pace with plenty of space for questions, conversation and note-taking. As well as identifying different species, we'll also be sharing their stories, and speaking about broader themes surrounding foraging.

At the end, we'll share some homemade food with freshly-foraged wild mushrooms.

We might chat about:

"How to look" at fungi. Sometimes it's the small details that can distinguish a toxic mushroom from a tasty one. We'll go over the anatomy of a mushroom and learn useful morphological terms, so you'll know which features to look out for.
“Where to look” for fungi. Mushroom foraging totally changes how you move through a forest. We'll chat about how to assess forest ecology as a forager, useful tree species, and mushroom growth habits.
Why fungi matter. We'll talk about the ecological roles of the mushrooms that we find, amidst broader discussions about their importance in global ecology.
Fungal storytelling, including folklore, traditional uses, and famous mushrooms from history.
Medicinal mushrooms. This includes traditional medicinal uses, current clinical trials, and recipes for how to make your own remedies at home.
Flavour profiles and recipes.
Foraging laws and rights.
Sustainable foraging practises - how to assess and minimise your impact on the local ecology.
The relationship between foraging and land politics.

Your thoughts, opinions and questions are most welcome, and your level of foraging experience doesn't matter. Mushroom walks are designed to be accessible to anyone.

Terms & Conditions

Location - the location of the walk will be emailed to you two weeks before the event. It will be no more than 1 hour's train from London, plus a short journey from the station.
Harvesting - In accordance with local bylaws, we won't be harvesting mushrooms, so no need to bring a basket. You'll leave with enough knowledge to be able to confidently harvest mushrooms elsewhere.
Refunds - please note that tickets are non-refundable. However, you can resell your ticket through Outsavvy's ReSell service.
Children - children are welcome at no extra cost, but please get in touch with Rights For Weeds to let me know that they're attending.
Dogs - dogs are welcome on the condition that none of the other attendees are allergic or have any strong objections. Please get in touch with Rights For Weeds if you plan on bringing a dog.
Wheelchairs - unfortunately, this walk is not suitable for all wheelchairs as we will be walking on wet, uneven ground. If you have any other accessibility needs, get in touch with Rights For Weeds.
Toilets - please note that we will be out in the woods without access to toilets or baby changing facilities.
