Salon Perverse: Jack Saul- a study in Victorian male sex work
Behind the strict moral facade of 19th-century Britain lay a thriving, covert world of male prostitution, underground brothels and aristocratic intrigue. At the center of it all was Jack Saul—an Irish-born male sex worker, dandy, and key figure in two of Victorian society’s most explosive scandals: the 1889 Cleveland Street Brothel Scandal and the Dublin Castle trials.
Join us for a provocative, immersive night tracing Jack Saul’s life and exploring the banned literature of the era, focusing heavily on The Sins of the Cities of the Plain; (or, The Recollections of a Mary-Ann) (1881) one of the earliest works of explicit gay erotic literature in the English language.
