CODE OF CONDUCT:
Hungama is a queer Bollywood hip hop night. Safe spaces for many in the South Asian LGBTQ+ community are rare. Hungama offers a chance to explore your queerness, connect with your authentic self and let loose. Under the dizzying disco lights, we can shed society’s expectations and be ourselves. With this in mind, please take care to acknowledge and respect the following as you embrace the chaos.
If you do not identify as South Asian, remember that you are a guest. We want to share this experience with you, but this is the home we never had. Please be aware of the space you are taking and make sure you prioritise those who are in need of this opportunity.
Hungama is a family, but judgemental aunties are not welcome. We do not tolerate racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, fat-phobia or classism. This is a queer space and bodies of any kind are welcomed. Always ask for consent. We have a zero tolerance policy on anyone who makes the space uncomfortable for others.
Be aware of when your actions may appropriate South Asian culture. Don’t 'screw the lightbulb' when you're dancing or wear a bindi if you have no direct connection to the culture. Be yourself or you may offend.
Please do not exoticise. There’s a difference between admiring clothes and dance moves and treating someone like they belong in a glass cabinet in a museum. Do not take pictures or film without consent. Be careful with language, even phrases that you may think are complimentary but perpetuate stereotypes.
Don’t assume someone’s identify. Always ask for someone’s pronouns. Use gender neutral pronouns (they/them) if you’re unsure. Gender is a construct. Be who you want to be.
Attending doesn’t mean you need to drink alcohol. There’s no pressure. Have fun in anyway you wish.
If at any point you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, please come and speak to someone associated with Hungama.
