Since 2016 Homos and Houmous has been schlepping around London with a smorgasbord of drag, comedy, live klezmer, poetry and politics. Hosted by music hall grand dame Chanukah Lewinsky (think Julie Walters on speed), the night began as an open mic at Housmans Bookshop for LGBTI+ Jews to celebrate these two identities which can so often feel at odds. Judaism has a long-standing tradition of camp and queerness and Homos and Houmous is always a raucous family affair; where Bette Midler’s musical stand-up in the bathhouses of New York meets arguments over Shabbat dinner.

Christian Adore: Lovable soft-boy Christian Adore improvises "radio-ready” ★★★★★ [LGBTQ+ Arts Review] songs, sketches and raps on the spot, creating shows full of 'Sequins, Spoofs, and Salaciousness! [The Guardian]'. Nominated for Edinburgh’s TV Festival 2020 New Voice Award, supported by Netflix, as well as an Off West End Award in 2019. Christian has performed on the BBC and BBC radio, produced sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, and performed at The Underbelly Southbank and The Royal Festival Hall. Fun fact: he's also on BBC Bitesize! When he's not writing kickass musical theatre like P.S. I'm a Terrible Person (Soho Theatre; The Cockpit) or Public Domain (Southwark Playhouse) with Forristal and Clarke, Christian can be found falling in love with literally everyone he sees. Bless him.
Shane Baker is the 2020 recipient of the ADRIENNE COOPER DREAMING IN YIDDISH prize. He serves as Executive Director of the Congress for Jewish Culture, a Yiddishist organization in New York, and is perhaps best known for his Yiddish translation of WAITING FOR GODOT, in which he has starred Off Broadway and internationally. He is a member of the Ridiculous Theatrical Company and has brought their sensibility to the Yiddish stage with his alter ego Mitzi Manna. Conceived at Camp B’nai Brith in the Laurentian Mountains and born in a Berlin basement, Mitzi was raised and educated on the stages of late-night cabarets over 5 continents. She is wanted by the authorities in numerous countries.Ruth Nicholson
Vivi Lachs is a historian, Yiddishist, Research Fellow at Birkbeck College, and feisty Yiddish singer. Her book Whitechapel Noise exposes the sex, politics, and religion of the immigrant East End. She sings edgy Yiddish music-hall songs which tell about (amongst other things) happenings in Morgan Street Market, Victoria Park, and on the London trolleybuses with the bands Klezmer Klub and Katsha’nes.
Rokhl Merlot: Yiddish Singer, Song-Collector, Jewy Hostess, Cantor to the Stars
Ruth Nicholson is a pianist, violinist and aspiring guitarist from Sheffield. Projects include the gig-theatre show A Beautiful Way to be Crazy, which is currently available to stream on demand from The Cockpit, trying to escape the winter lockdown blues by cycling as far as is reasonably allowed, and planning the next allotment season. Musically Ruth is classically trained but has eclectic tastes and likes playing klezmer and jazz the most at the moment.

Dr. Lazlo Pearlman (he/they/Laz) is a performance creator, director, researcher and lecturer whose work is often inspired by Queer, Jewish and Trans- identities. Laz's performance and scholarly work and interests entangle socio-political and philosophical ideas with contemporary and physical theatres, performance art, cabaret, burlesque, vaudeville, sex shows, camp/parody, clowning, film/video and conventional theatre. After ten years of making trans, jewish and queer performance works in London (and before that living and making work in Seattle, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles), Laz relocated to Newcastle Upon Tyne where he is a Senior Lecturer in Theatre and Performance Studies at Northumbria University. A selection of Laz's works can be seen at Lazlopearlman.com
Nana Schewitz, the fully circumcised yet not-so-kosher Jewish star, thumps it and bumps it in her traditional Judeo-Centenarian style. Fusing diabolical guilt with legendary comedy, Nana is sure to have you clutching your chai's as she force feeds you her world-renowned matzo ball soup. Just remember, don’t fuck your Nana!
