Hello, we’re Farah, Phil and Vimbai!
Working with Queen Mary, University London as part of the Partnership for Black People’s Health project, an involvement project to engage Black African communities and Black Caribbean communities in research to reduce the widely recognised disproportionate burden of health inequalities that we suffer in all areas of medicine and public health.
We're looking for Somali women who have accessed maternity services in the UK to take part in a 2-hour consultation on maternity services. For anyone ages 18 to 45. We want to hear about your experiences of giving birth, discuss any discrimination faced during childbirth and talk about why we have these issues and what we can do to resolve them.
Black women are almost four times more likely to die from childbirth than white women. The Women and Equalities Committee has called on the government to set a definitive target to eliminate appalling disparities in maternal deaths. The committee is concerned that the government and NHS leadership have underestimated the extent to which racism plays a role in perpetuating inequalities.
Everyone deserves access to good quality healthcare. Sadly, this isn't always the case for everyone and many Black communities face systemic racism and other issues which contribute to disproportionate health inequalities amongst Black people. To help us address these issues, we want to work with communities to understand what the barriers to accessing healthcare are, we want to develop and implement research as well as create effective solutions to dismantle these barriers and create a more equitable healthcare system for all.
Everyone who joins will get a £25 gift voucher per hour as a thank-you for your time and participation. This can be paid as online vouchers or physical vouchers. You can also receive £10 towards travel costs as long as you keep the receipts. Refreshments will be provided.
The workshop will take place from 11 am to 1 pm on Thursday 23rd November 2023 at The Green House, 244-254 Cambridge Heath Road, London, E2 9DA. Please make sure you sign up for a space!
