As part of LGBTQAI+ History Month 2024 in Lewisham, VSSL Studio is hosting a talk to explain their recent 9-month programme, FACET.
FACET EXPANDED: ON HERMAPHROGENESIS & CENTERING QUEER ART
Join the conversation between artist Marcin Gawin and the VSSL team (Ash Mcnaughton, Mine Kaplangi, Benjamin Sebastian).
We, the VSSL team, along with Marcin Gawin, will delve into what defines an exhibition, a practice, a space, or an art programme as "queer". We'll reflect on our individual perceptions of queerness and how these were manifested in the FACET programme. We welcome the audience to join the conversation, inviting questions and focusing on the necessity for more queer-centred programmes within the arts. More information about FACET and VSSL can be found below. For any inquiries about this event, please contact us at mine@vssl-studio.org.
Thank you to Lewisham Council for supporting our programme and event!
Looking forward,
[VSSL Team]
FACET was an innovative nine-month project, presented by VSSL Studio in partnership with Arts Council England, designed to centre and elevate queer people and art. From May 2023 to January 2024, VSSL Studio collaborated with five contemporary visual artists to co-produce a series of five exhibitions, exploring the ever-evolving and myriad spectrum of contemporary queer expression. Featuring exhibitions from: Alicia Radage + Benjamin Sebastian, June Lam, Rocio Boliver and Marcin Gawin - as well as a dynamic group exhibition. Each showcase offered an immersive experience that celebrates queer culture through an expansive range of mediums.
Who are we? 🌈
VSSL studio is a place of gathering and creation - we are a not-for-profit creative studio, home to multiple artists and projects, located in Deptford, London. Our studio is a site for artistic production and engagement, dedicated to the holding and nurturing of time-based practices and their satellites. We are a queer-led organisation and we centre queer and trans* artists in our work. Alongside our permanent group of studio artists, VSSL is a residency site and venue, and hosts a regular public programme of curatorial and guest projects. Key collaborative relationships and projects include ]performance s p a c e[, FUTURERITUAL, and Live Art Club.
The studio was established in 2020 by Benjamin Sebastian and Joseph Morgan Schofield, and activated in 2021 with our first public offerings: Gathering in a Time of Plague, a curatorial programme, and The Sunday Skool, an online artist development programme. We intend that VSSL becomes a place of gathering - a place where our communities can meet and grow.
