Who Are We?
Cheer Up Luv is a globally renowned photo series and platform retelling accounts of street harassment, founded by Eliza Hatch. The project combines photography with journalism, activism, and social media, and has gained interest from all over the world. Cheer Up Luv has since expanded from a photo series into a multimedia platform which facilitates a podcast, art, design, submission, events, workshops, lectures and a safe space for discussions about misogyny and sexism.
Best Foot Forward Skate Academy is a skate school which aims to create a safe, inclusive and fun environment for learners of all levels, ages and backgrounds to progress and gain experience in the world of skateboarding. With over a decade of experience, Best Foot Forward aims to combine the fun and excitement of skateboarding with individual care to create an engaging experience for all.
What is Go Skate Day?
Go Skateboarding Day was created by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) in 2004, to promote events in major global cities to help make skateboarding more accessible. Go Skate Day has grown to become a global event, with thousands of skaters celebrating in cities around the world, promoting the positive aspects of skateboarding, including:
- Creativity
- Community
- Healthy physical activity
- Bringing the skateboarding community closer together
76% of women feel uncomfortable exercising in public due to harassment, and women and LGBTQIA+ people face significant barriers when it comes to access in sports and outdoor exercise. When women and girls are exposed to sexual harassment while exercising, it can affect their self-esteem and confidence and can even discourage them from getting into sports.
Creating safe, supportive spaces for women and LGBTQ+ people to try skateboarding is key to driving more visibility of both groups into the sport. The takeaway of the event will be that skateboarding should be for everyone and should be enjoyed by women, girls, and marginalised genders without fear, judgement, or threat to personal safety.
