Fed up of reading the paper, watching the news or listening to the radio and hearing people talking about trans people, but very rarely to us?
Do you feel as though your experiences, knowledge, or perspectives could contribute to the conversation?
Do you want to make a difference and have your voice heard?
Then join us for this half-day media skills workshop for trans and non-binary people!
In part one, led by Scottish Trans, you will:
- Learn about effective ways of talking about trans people's lives for a mainstream media audience
- Think about how to look after yourself when engaging with the media
In part two, led by Hannah Rodger, an experienced Scottish journalist, you will:
- Learn practical tips on how the media works and how to engage with journalists
- Have the opportunity to do practice interviews - looking at the different approaches that might be needed for different styles of interview, like human interest stories vs. news/political reporting
This event is free of charge, and lunch will be provided.
The meeting room has step free access and accessible toilets.
Do I have to have any experience of engaging with the media?
No, none required! Even if you're not sure if media engagement is for you, or have never done it before, if you're interested in finding out more then please do join us.
Will the journalist attending report on what we say in our practice interviews?
Absolutely not! Hannah is joining us to help give trans and non-binary people in Scotland an insight into how the media works, and to give you a chance to practice how you might respond during an interview. We'll also have a group agreement on the day to make sure we all feel safe and comfortable sharing our experiences as part of the workshop.
I have to travel to get there, will you cover my expenses?
Yes absolutely! We will refund travel expenses for getting to the event. If for any reason you'd not be able to attend without the cost of your travel in advance, then get in touch and we can arrange to purchase your tickets for you.
I live too far away to attend, what can I do?
We will probably run the events again in the future, in different locations. However, if you live close enough to Glasgow that you would be able to attend if you stayed overnight the day before the workshop, then get in touch with us directly and we may be able to pay for this accommodation for you (but you need to speak to us before you book it!)
