DATE: Thursday 12th September
TIME: 18:00
LOCATION: Nunhead Cemetery Chapel
“Body Archaeology” - a live performance of impossible deduction from Miriam Levy.
Shrouded in a palpable haze of mystery, five structures stand amongst the ruin of a chapel - unstoried monoliths ripe with potential. Using improvised movement as speculative Geoarchaeology, Miriam Levy peels through the haze to compose a live response to this site. Their real time composition calls on the insatiable human desire to uncover the past, our collective pull towards sites of secrecy, and our curiosity for the liminal.
Following their investigation, the findings of this embodied research will be shared in a live performance beginning at 18:00.
Completely unexplored until the actual day, the outcome of this performance is entirely unknown. Perhaps our performer will find a tremendous stage; worthy props; backing dancers; revelatory truths; fictions; rewritten histories; a home; a lover; chaos; pain; peace; The Answer or nothing at all…
…the only way to know is to pass by the Chapel and witness the performance for yourself.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Miriam Levy is a queer artist working with dance, performance and poetry.
Their creative work explores the relationship between personal and political, looking closely at themes of care, community and rage. She works with dyke camp and a lesbian sense of humour, and explores how these lifebloods can shape the moving body.
She has a particular interest in site-specific work and performing outside of theatre spaces. They enjoy collaborations with visual artists, such as their latest work with Dawn Woolley on the installation project Rebel Selves.
Their recent work has focussed on DIY hairdressing as queer community care, including writing published in t’ART Magazine and a performance commissioned by Third Row Dance Company.
As a performer they have worked with choreographers such as Alice+Synne, Ruby Portus and Livia Rita. Her choreographic work has been shown at The Place theatre, Bermondsey Project Space and Darlington Hall.

The solo exhibition is part of the Summer series from the FLP x Friends of Nunhead Cemetery Curatorial Program, that reimagines the historic chapel at Nunhead Cemetery as a site of speculative archaeology, exploring the intersections of time, place, ritual and ecology.

EVENTS:
In the spirit of ‘Only Eternity Lasts Forever’, the exhibition space will serve as a blank canvas for a diverse lineup of artists, writers, dancers, and performers. Over the course of the show, these contributors will use the chapel to host installations, workshops, and events that explore the peculiar and varied ways humans interact with sacred places. Each event is a unique extension of the exhibition’s theme, further blurring the lines between art, ritual, and space.
