Join disabled artist Lady Kitt and members of their drag family DGA for an introduction to the ongoing eco art project Drag Declares Emergency. The project asks “How can drag support the wellbeing of queer people and the health of planet Earth?” Particularly focusing on drag as a site for healing and the support offered by drag families, this workshop invites attendees to:
- Invent and collage your own mini mythical drag creature (a bringer of queer joy and care) from second hand fabrics and recycled card
- Share experiences of finding & forging chosen, queer or logical* family
Through Drag Declares Emergency we have been developing characters which mischievously recraft representations of health, always making costumes and props from recycled, reused and natural materials. We have been inspired by Chimeras: Mythical creatures with parts taken from different animals, like merfolk and Penghou (a tree spirit from Chinese folklore with the face of a human and the body of a dog).
These Hybrid characters are often associated with wild imagination and implausibility. However, stories featuring these creatures often share very real perspectives and experiences of existing “well” beyond the binary in terms of gender, ecology, sexuality and Disability.
