With Rhys Slade-Jones' rugby club fairy tale - The Land of My Fathers and Mothers and Some Other People
In Treherbert rugby club, amongst the fag smoke and the singing, Rhys’ parents fell in love. Rhys has never fallen in love, but he thinks it’s a nice thing to do because that’s what his Mam said. It’s all in her diary. Rhys has read it all.
The Land of My Fathers and Mothers and Some Other People is an all-singing, all-dancing re-enactment of what Rhys’s Mam wrote down 40 years ago. This frenzied one-man cabaret mixes stand-up, dance and good old-fashioned sing-along to breathe life into his Mam’s stories, and bring Treherbert rugby club back to life.
This show about valley life celebrates the best bits of being part of small, claustrophobic, meddling, loving, nosey community in South Wales. Rhys catapults his audience back to the hot summer of 1977 – where everyone was wearing polyester and dancing to Donna Summer. This show transports you to a time and place where Rhys isn’t from, and neither are you, so it’s kinda a fairytale, but set in a rugby club.
‘Slade-Jones’ style is nearly impossible to pin down. It’s a deconstructed drag show, drawing on Vaudeville, autobiographical theatre and stand-up comedy. It is energetic, bold, with a high physical energy.’ REVIEWS HUB
