Join Us for "LGBTQ+ Asylum Seekers – Other Narratives"
Date: Wednesday, 15th January 2025
Time: 5:00–7:00 PM
Location: Westminster City Archives, 10 St Ann's Street, London, SW1P 2DF
Explore the powerful and often overlooked stories of LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in an era dominated by hostile and inflammatory narratives.
From phrases like “Stop the boats!” to dehumanising language of “swarms” and “invasions,” the rhetoric targeting asylum seekers has become mainstream, voiced by prime ministers and cabinet members—some of whom are themselves descendants of migrants and refugees. Politicians and media alike perpetuate harmful stereotypes, vilifying those seeking safety.
To challenge these narratives and amplify the voices of those most affected, the Westminster LGBT+ Forum is proud to host Marcus Dure and Samantha, two LGBTQ+ asylum seekers who have fled persecution, imprisonment, and the threat of death to seek refuge in the UK. They will share their powerful testimonies and lived experiences of resilience and hope.
Speaker Bios
Marcus Dure
An LGBTQ+ asylum seeker from Turkmenistan, bordering Iran, Marcus faced persecution in his homeland, where same-sex relationships are punishable by up to five years in prison. After narrowly escaping arrest in a police-led entrapment operation targeting LGBTQ+ individuals, Marcus fled Turkmenistan. He was granted asylum in the UK in October 2024.
Samantha
Samantha, a genderfluid LGBTIQ+ asylum seeker of Turkmen origin, was born in Uzbekistan, where same-sex relationships are criminalised. Growing up in a conservative environment, she hid her identity. At 14, Samantha moved to Russia, enduring racism and homophobia throughout her schooling. In 2016, she began living openly as a gay man in Moscow and became active in LGBTQ+ advocacy. After Russia intensified its anti-LGBTQ+ laws in 2022, Samantha fled to the UK, arriving in October that year. Granted refugee status in March 2024, she now identifies and lives as a trans woman.
