Please note that the audio of the workshop will be recorded for a research project by the facilitator, margomool. The project is looking at how embodied vocal practices can generate body autonomy within trans+ folks. This workshop is free but donations are welcome to support the facilitator.
Event Info
Like so many aspects of life, the voice is highly policed by the gender binary. Yet using our voices in community is a precious tool for collective healing and joy. TRANS CHORUS is a space for trans people to come together and revel in the sounds that come naturally to us, embracing that our voices may sit outside of gendered expectations.
We welcome everyone who falls under the spectrum of transgender, whether that means your gender differs from the gender you were/are assigned, your gender can't be contained within binary prescriptions of gender, or you are at a stage of questioning your gender.
The beginning of the year can be a tender time. This workshop will focus on grounding ourselves into the new year, using our voices as a playful anchor. During the workshop, we will explore with improvisation, embodied singing exercises, and simple rounds and chants to help us access trust and joy with our vocal bodies. No previous of singing experience is required. Just a willingness to listen and give it a go.
We recommend attendees wear clothes you can move in and bring a bottle of water plus some snacks if you need it! All movements will be accessible to people of all abilities.
Access
- The venue, Queercircle, has step free access and is wheelchair friendly. There are accessible all enclosed all-gender toilets on the ground floor. You can find all the access information about Queercircle and how to get there here.
- The space will be held with the knowledge of the nuanced and changing vocal experiences of trans and gender non-conforming people, which is affected by factors such as HRT, binding and speech training. All exercises will also be facilitated with a trauma-informed practice, taking into account how singing and body work is a beautiful but vulnerable thing, and can sometimes bring emotions to the surface.
- The content of the workshop will be accessible to the sensory experiences of neurodiverse and chronically ill people as well as people with differing mobility.
- There will be comfortable chairs and bean bags in the space.
- Attendees are encouraged to move at their own pace and take as many breaks as they need outside of the scheduled pauses throughout the session.
