NB - This month's gathering is for Trans/non-binary/non-cis people.
Ashley (they/them) is a queer Malaysian Movement Artist and Community Dance Facilitator based in Britain. The values of their practice as an artist are PLAY, OWNERSHIP and CELEBRATE which have been created based on how their identities intersect and they are the principles of how they work.
They facilitate movement/dance classes for everyone and anyone. If you're young, old, differently abled, experienced or unexperienced in movement, their classes aim to focus on community building, joy, and creative exploration using movement to form connections with others in a caring and supportive space.
What to Expect
Let's Play classes are for anyone who identifies as trans, non-binary or non-cis who are beginners or less experienced movers who want to get moving their body without a certain style in an inclusive supportive space. Classes are focused on community-building, care and exploring movement through props and dance/movement. Props are any object that you can dance/move with! To initiate movement with props we would use creative dance games that are open to interpretation to help initiate movement. It is mostly improvisation and nothing is right or wrong!
Please email hello.ashleylim@proton.me if you have access needs even if they are undiagnosed. This helps Ashley create a more supportive class for you!
What To Bring
Please wear comfortable loose clothing or whatever you feel most at ease to move in. Layers may be handy to help regulate your temperature. Feel free to bring any snacks or nibbles, comfort items, journal etc. anything that you may need to feel present in the space.
Accessibility
The Space: This offering is currently booked in a first floor studio and not wheel chair accessible, however efforts will be made to accommodate specific accessibility needs if brought to our attention, we may be able to offer online slots or move to the ground floor studio in some cases with enough notice. There is on street parking nearby and a short journey down a cobbled street is required to access the studio. We have mats and bolsters for seating as well as chairs available upon request. There are two gender neutral restrooms in the building one on the same floor and one on the ground floor, unfortunately these are not wheelchair accessible. There is also a treatment room which can be used as a break out space. There is gas and infrared heating, fans for when it’s warm, as well as tea making facilities on site. The studio has dimmable warm lighting. The studio & equipment is regularly aired and sanitised, however please be considerate of others health and spacial needs when in the space. There are masks available and hand sanitisers. Do not attend if you are feeling unwell, have symptoms or could be COVID positive. If you have any queries or requests, please contact us here.
Donations
These offerings are supported by donations from our cosy clubbers. Donations cover expenses, hire costs and facilitators fees with any excess being diverted to mutual aid or fundraisers.
For all our offerings we suggest a tiered donation scheme:
Supporter Rate (cost of you and another) £15
Sustainer Rate (base cost/just you) £10
Community Rate* £5
Please consider your available resources and financial privilege when selecting what to donate as spaces are limited. You can find out more about sliding scale pricing here.
*The Lower rate represents an honest acknowledgment that there are those whose economic circumstances would prevent them from taking part in the classes offered if there was not a deliberate opportunity made for them to access services at a cost reflective of their economic realities. If you struggle financially, we acknowledge that you should still have access to these classes and that your contribution is equal to those of higher income brackets.
