LADY OLÉ presents SUPERESTAR with Special Guest YURENA performing LIVE!!!
In the early 2000s, a social phenomenon shook Spain. Sensationalist TV shows were exploiting the dignity of some people who were fighting to find their place in the showbiz. Money, lies, and perfectly curated surrealism were the backbone of this movement that devoured the life and soul of genuine people, often laughing at them and not with them. A practice that marked the era of trash TV.
At the center of this movement was Tamara, a singer from the Basque Country who was catapulted to fame with the hit song ‘No Cambié'. It sold millions of copies, and Tamara went on to become a phenomenon for the wrong reasons. But the LGBTQIA community recognised the underlying bullying, and held Tamara ‘Queen of Otherness’, helping her achieve her dreams whilst being supported by people who loved her for what she represented. She released an LP produced by well-known 80s pop legends (Alaska, McNamara, Miguélez) and went on to have international success and recognition after her new name: Yurena. People like John Waters spoke out to support Tamara who obviosuly had a lot in common with his universe of trash culture. Films, and international tours followed. She performed in London for our previous party Pelucas y Tacones in 2013, and a whole musical movement (Tontipop) found its roots at this event. Yurena is a living legend, for all the right reasons. Courage, self-steem, determination, humility, honesty, and personal growth. Brutally honest, equally captivating, and inspiring for those who deemed themselves different and are out of the norm.
25 years later, Netflix has released ‘Superestar’, a 6-episode biopic series narrating that movement, her life, and the ‘Tamarismo’ phenomenon (with some added Lynchian surrealism) that followed. She is now top of the game again, and we are extremely honoured and proud to have YURENA back in London, and performing for us at Lady Olé. Vuelve el Tamarismo!!!
This will be a popular event, make sure you get your tickets in advance.
