TRANS CHORUS is a space for trans people to come together and revel in the sounds that come naturally to us, embracing that our voices may sit outside of gendered expectations.

For this workshop final workshop of the year, we will be in the outdoor paradise that is Plot 9 in Maze Hill! We'll be getting cosy around the fire, sharing and learning simple songs and chants. You're welcome to teach a song if you have one!

No previous of singing experience is required. Just a willingness to listen and give it a go.

Bring a bottle of water plus some snacks if you need it! Tea will be provided.

We welcome everyone who falls under the spectrum of transgender, whether that means your gender differs from the gender you were/are assigned, your gender can't be contained within binary prescriptions of gender, or you are at a stage of questioning your gender.

Plot 9 is in east Greenwich, a few minutes walk from Maze Hill Overground Station which is served by Southeastern and Thameslink trains. You can catch a direct train to Maze Hill from any of: Greenwich, Deptford, London Bridge, Cannon St, Blackfriars, City Thameslink, Farringdon, St Pancras or West Hampstead.
VIDEO DIRECTIONS: It’s a short route from Maze Hill station to Plot 9 but a little bit convoluted so please look at video directions here or below showing how to get there from Platform 2 of Maze Hill where you’ll alight if coming from central London.
It is also possible to travel via North Greenwich and get the 188 or 422 bus, alighting on Trafalgar Road or Woolwich Road and walking up Vanbrugh Hill, turning right onto Restell Close. The space is halfway down the hill on the right. Look for the bright green campervan and the entrance is 10 metres beyond it on the right.
If you’re driving then there’s usually plenty of free space on nearby Humber Road (free parking from 6:30pm). Parking can be arranged outside Plot 9 if required with advance notice given.
Bikes – plenty of room to lock them outside the entrance to Plot 9.

Access

Plot 9 is not (yet) wheelchair accessible. There are 2 small steps to access the space and a small step to access the toilet.
The workshop space will be held with the knowledge of the nuanced and changing vocal experiences of trans and gender non-conforming people, which is affected by factors such as HRT, binding and speech training.
Gentle reminder that embodied singing can bring up emotions and feelings that can be challenging. There is no pressure to do anything in the workshop. The space will be facilitated with a trauma-informed practice, taking into account how singing is a beautiful but vulnerable thing, and can sometimes bring emotions to the surface. Please participate in ways that feel safe for you, which may mean listening and opting out of moments. You may decide that this space isn't for you right now which is also valid. Here is a guide made by Healing Justice Ldn that offers tools to help you manage your energy after the workshop.
The content of the workshop will be accessible to the sensory experiences of neurodiverse and chronically ill people as well as people with differing mobility. There is no need to be verbal in the space or to feel like you have to perform. Attendees are encouraged to move at their own pace and adapt prompts to suit them. Anyone can take as many breaks as they need outside of the scheduled pauses throughout the session.
There will be chairs and blankets in the space and we will be seated for the majority of the workshop.
