CLASS DESCRIPTION
The Feminist Lecture Program welcomes you back to our autumn term as we explore the history of Women and Piracy! This week we're joined by writer Laura Sook Duncombe, author of "Pirate Women: The Princesses, Prostitutes, and Privateers Who Ruled the Seven Seas" and "A Pirate's Life for She: Swashbuckling Women Through the Ages", to explore the lives and legends of the most notorious female pirates.
This course will explore and debunk some of the most popular myths about piracy, confirming that real life is stranger (and more interesting) than fiction.
We will spend time with the pirates you know, like Anne Bonny and Mary Read, and meet the ones you don't, like Sayyida al-Hurra and Cheng I Sao. We will come to understand how women are often left out of pirate history and why it is such a disservice to history (let alone these women) for these stories not to be told.We will also uncover the often misogynistic ways that history itself is recorded (and why it matters) as well explore the wider links between pirate women and their connection to the larger history of the world. Parrots and eyepatches are optional. 😉
ABOUT OUR LECTURER
Laura Sook Duncombe is an author, lawyer, and feminist who enjoys Star Wars, Broadway, romance novels, and Sherlock Holmes (when she's not out pirating). She lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with her fantastic husband and three incredible children.
