Join us on Thursday 5th March for a deep dive into dark academia with authors Elspeth Wilson and Heather Colley. They'll be chatting about their own novels, These Mortal Bodies and The Gilded Butterfly Effect, the popularity of dark academia and campus novels and their inspiration for their work.
These Mortal Bodies has been described as, ‘a richly atmospheric campus novel, perfect for fans of The Secret History and dark academia, These Mortal Bodies is an intoxicating story of obsession, infatuation and toxic friendship in the world of the elites, where rules are made to be broken’, while The Gilded Butterfly Effect is ideal for ‘fans of Mona Awad’s Bunny and Ottessa Moshfegh’s My Year of Rest and Relaxation rejoice—your newest “weird girl” antiheroes are finally here in this unflinching feminist campus novel.’

Elspeth Wilson is a Scottish writer and poet with an interest in how we live in our bodies and how we make them homes. Her debut poetry pamphlet, Too Hot to Sleep, is published by Written Off Publishing and was shortlisted for the Saltire Society’s 2023 Poetry Book of the Year. Her debut novel, These Mortal Bodies, was published with Simon and Schuster in 2025. When she’s not writing, she can usually be found in or near the sea, or on the lookout for new kinds of vegan chocolate.
Heather Colley’s debut novel THE GILDED BUTTERFLY EFFECT was published by Three Rooms Press in October 2025. Her short fiction has won awards including the Oxford Review of Books short fiction prize, the Hopwood Award, the BNU-Oxford short fiction prize (runner-up), and the Desperate Literature Prize shortlist.
