We are delighted to welcome Dominic Janes, a cultural historian who studies texts and visual images relating to Britain in its local and international contexts since the eighteenth century. Within this sphere he focuses on the histories of gender, sexuality and religion. He has been the recipient of a number of research awards including fellowships from the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy and been a visiting research professor at the University of the Arts London and the University for the Creative Arts.
He will talk about his latest book: “Freak to Chic: Fashion and Sexuality in 20th Century Britain"
'Gay' Men in and out of Fashion after Oscar Wilde
In Victorian Britain the term 'fallen woman' indicated someone who because of sexual impropriety was no longer seen as respectable. In this talk Dominic Janes will be exploring the lives of fashionable men, such as Oscar Wilde, who fell from respectability because of their queerness but also others who made spectacular and unlikely rises to prominence as a result of an interwar craze for freaky fashions. He will be also be talking about the contemporary issues that inspired his upcoming book Freak to Chic (Bloomsbury).
The presentation will be followed by a Q & A session.
After this all participants have the opportunity to introduce themselves briefly after the talk. Such as "Hi, I am J-F and organise events, let me know if you need help with any forthcoming celebration, meeting, incentive, conference and event."
