Welcome to the first What Can We Do Collective symposium!
During this event we will look at the theme of community care, it’s impacts and presence within the lived and shared experiences of the Black and Brown trans community. We welcome people of all communities to come and listen to our amazing speakers engage in thoughtful and productive discussion.
We will have a series of talks throughout the day with plenty of breaks and a discussion panel featuring all of our speakers to finish. We encourage everyone to actively take part with questions and thoughts through the forum/chat function of Zoom. More details about timing and speakers will be available closer to the event.
What do we mean when we talk about “community care”?
For us, “community care” encompasses all of the ways that individuals and community groups look after and provide for each other. Often meeting needs that our society and government fail to meet. While community care happens in every community, our focus will be on care in the Black and Brown trans community.
We have chosen to focus on community care for our first symposium, because we feel it is important to create a space where we can discuss work happening now, and how we can all support that work going forward. We have some amazing speakers lined up who are all experts in living in and caring for the Black and Brown Trans community. They will be discussing a variety of topics including how they each define community care, histories of their communities, and the work they are involved with. We are excited to be able to share this opportunity to hear from some brilliant minds from the online Black and Brown Trans community, who will bring much needed discussions and ideas to this space. We look forward to sharing and learning with you so we can all keep moving forward together informed, growing and improving.
At the What Can We Do Collective we have had an inspiring and uplifting few months. With your help we have been able to provide more support and financial aid to Black and Brown trans people than we had expected at this stage and we are so grateful. We decided to organise this event as a way of bringing together the many voices we have been trying to engage with and uplift, so they can share the important work happening all around us. These discussions will pave the way for us to carry on our work raising money for Black and Brown trans folks in need with the power of knowledge and community on our side.
